    ground water is usually there along time, as its usually in the form of a underground lake in a subterranean cave.
    it moves slowly because the ground around it is acting like a giant dense filter.
    think about it, if you pour a gallon of gas on the ground, it sinks in, right? eventually it will mix into the ground water, and yes, it may filter out over time as the water moves, but it still becomes contaminated for a long period of time.
